UK economy accelerates again in May, services sector boosts GDP

Official data showed gross domestic product (GDP) increased 0.1% in May 2026 after a slight decline in April, restoring the UK economy to a way of steady expansion. The revival was mainly generated by the services sector which helped to offset the persisting weaknesses in manufacturing, industrial production and construction activities.

Services sector powers UK economic growth

Services firms remained the strongest driver of growth in May, as output rose 0.3% on the month. Growth was supported by industries such as computer programming, advertising, scientific research and other professional services.

But technology-related industries and pharmaceutical research were among the top performers, with services remaining the major driver of the wider economy, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) stated. During this period there was a particularly great growth of the scientific research and development.

Manufacturing & Construction Still Under Pressure

The overall picture was one of an improving UK economy, although there were a number of areas of the economy under strain. Industrial output decreased 0.5% in May and construction output fell 0.8%, hampering the pace of recovery.

Businesses in manufacturing and construction have continued to operate in an environment of growing operational costs, uncertain demand and larger economic restrictions impacting investment decisions.

Three-Month Growth Points to More Stable Economy

But looking beyond the monthly data, the UK economy increased by 0.7% in the three months to May 2026. It was a slight slowdown from the previous three months but experts read the news as a sign of continued resilience in the midst of economic concerns.

But the latest estimates suggest the UK economy has escaped a sharper drop, with service-based industries providing important support, but growth is likely to stay restricted.

Confidence is a big concern for the business community

GDP bounced back to growth in May but companies remain concerned about higher costs, threats to the global economy and changing market conditions. But for sustainable development, it will need more investment, higher productivity and more confidence among firms, analysts added.

Policymakers looking at the country's longer-term economic prospects are likely to focus on promoting economic growth, aiding firms and raising productivity.

UK Economic Outlook

Latest GDP figures show a cautiously positive picture of Britain’s economy but growth is still modest. Services were holding up in important areas, but weaker manufacturing and construction activity pointed to the continuing challenges.

Economists will be watching consumer demand, business investment, inflation trends and interest rate changes to see if the recovery will gain steam in the months ahead.
